Extra for Grease fans

Mom- remember we watched the Grease musical show on TV where we voted on the best leads for Broadway? Well before the Mets game, the cast was at Shea stadium and sang a couple songs. The male lead that won was there!! He's the last guy on the right. Here they are singing "Grease Lightning"
Oh, and one more comment about the Mets game. Don't ever let anyone talk down about New Yorkers. In the last inning, everyone was standing up and Josiah started to cry (real sweet and quiet like). He wouldn't tell me what was wrong at first, I thought huh? Did someone insult your happy dance? What is the matter??!! And he finally admitted it was because he couldn't see. So the Mets fan to our right stood him up on the poles and held him where he could have a good view. Bless their hearts!!!

Mariners and Mets

Kaler's at Shea Stadium

We watched batting practice and would you believe it, every Kaler got a baseball! The pitching coach tossed it right to'em each time. You just have to sit there and be cute, I guess!!
We tried to get rally fries but oh well. We're giving up on that goal!!

What a game!! First of all, we had rockin' seats thanks to Cheryl and ebay... the temperature was perfect... we were surrounded by friendly New Yorkers... its the last year at Shea before they tear it down... awesome view... and on top of all that, we got to see Felix pitch, and since its an interleague game, we got to see the rare occasion that Felix actually got to bat. So here's my baseball boys, telling all the Mets fans that usually the pitcher just bunts the ball. But here we are, bases loaded and two outs..... Felix is up to bat....

You know what Felix did? You know. He turned to us, winked, and hit a Grand Slam!! (Ok, I lie about the wink part) Apparently its the first time in 27 years that a pitcher in the American League has done that!! Go Felix!!! (We did have a Felix sign and Greg thinks he winked at us coming around the bases...)

Here's our Felix sign (the kids did it and yes, we know fielding is spelt wrong:) the kids decided to leave it but you shoulda heard the flack we got from the crowd!! They were just jealous...

Unfortuneately, Felix got hurt in the fifth inning and came out of the game. He did get to bat one more time, I got a picture of his perfect batting average.

It was an amazing night! Mariners won 5-2. The Mets fans were awesome. We're still on a baseball high and now truckin' on up through Connecticut. Next stop, Massachusets. HUGS
PS. We just heard from our friends in Seattle that we got on TV in the 4th inning! Yeay! Too bad we didn't get any Rally Fries!

National Treasure extra

OH yeah!! The National Treasure thing. Turns out, the movie crew did actually film here at Independence Hall, even though it is a new bell up in the tower. We talked to one of the security workers, who said they did part of the filming here and part on a replica built somewhere in California. He said some of the shots were hard becuase "they don't close down tours for anything, even Hollywood" so apparently during the movie tourists were getting tours of the hall, and our security friend was right there watching.

That would be different than the National Archives building in DC... you know the part, where they have this cool underground security for the Declaration of Independence? Thats all balogny and they never even went inside the building to film. Just got the outside!! Also, apparently all the original working drafts of the Declaration are right here in Philadelphia. Only the signed one is in DC (which made it legal.)
The bell rang for us at 6:pm, signifying... we missed the last official tour. Oh Tina, check out these hydrangeas in Philly. They're all over the place and we thought of you!! HUGS

Philadelphia

Well! We didn't quite get on the road as fast as we thought we would... I wasn't counting on the kids resisting (they wanted to stay at Gally) and the warm relaxing sun coaxing me into a nap right in the middle of the blue water. But we did eventually load up.. thanks to Greg, who did all the work and then ended up with a migraine as a result. So we made it to..... Baltimore! It was a "quick, find a hotel before I puke" kind of manuever... but we all enjoyed the rest and Greg never did throw up. (Whew) So Sunday we got rolling and found out about a HuH? afternoon baseball game in Philadelphia??!! Game on!!

Luckily they had tickets and we were even on time... so we got to take in the Phillies/Angels game. And you know what? People out here are really friendly. They saw our Mariners shirts and we got minimal flack. They were generally happy to share their team!! Though not everybody knew where Seattle was. That was kinda funny. "Woshington huh? Somewhere round the nothwest conah?"
Daddy had to buy a hat... he has visions of a sports room someday and decorating the walls with hats from every stadium in America. Plus, it was actually pretty hot. Here's how the rest of us handled the heat....
The first of many icecreams! Here's the Phillies mascot, the "Phanatic". We thought the Moose was random but....
Not so bad!!! After the game, we ventured off to the Philadelphia historic disctrict, with only one "temporary delay" winding up across a bridge into Jersey... which by the way, "temporary delays" are extra dangerous up here because you have to pay tolls on turnpikes and bridges... we were lucky we had the $3.00 to get back over the bridge! Anyway, we made it and learned all about the liberty bell and Independence Hall.
We found out the liberty bell is cracked because the last time they rung it, they did it for two hours straight on George Washington's birthday. Apparently they rung the bell a lot back in the day... for summoning the Continental Congress, announcing the signing of the Declaration of Independence, for war efforts, civil right, women's rights.... The bell is embraced as the symbol of freedom even made its own cross country trek in a wagon back in the early 20th century to inspire people across the land. It was called the State House bell until it was adopted in the civil rights movement, where it got its current name, Liberty Bell.
Did you know Philadelphia was the nations first capital? (I didn't, until today.) It housed the congress for ten years- 1790-1800, and saw the first democratic changing of power from Washington to our second president, John Adams. I learned that this was significant because before this time, power had only changed hands by death (etiher bloodlines, war or tyranny) and this was the first time a ruler of a nation gave over his power willingy. it represented "we are a country of laws, not leaders" This is Independence Hall, where all of that took place!
We also walked over to the Park of the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier" where thousands of soldiers were buried who died from sickness, injury, or in prisoner camps during the revolutionary war.
Overall, it was a well balanced fun and enlightening day... we are staying tonight in Edison (near New Brunswick), New Jersey. Tomorrow we hope to find us more chick-fil-a's and meet up with the Mariners at Shea stadium. See you then!!!

Happy Juneteenth

Hello out there! greetings from Counseling conference at Gallaudet. Greg and kids arrived safely last night, they were so darn cute, doing about a half hour happy dance to be back on Gallaudet grounds. I love that my kids have a true spirit of adventure! They did about 30 laps on the dorm platform thing (balcony... no... ha! I am losing my English... anyway) they are so thrilled, and my colleagues greeted them with hugs, and JJ can code switch so quick to brag about his airplane gameboy score in sign, it blessed my heart. Then we opened all the packages I've been ordering on ebay (a story for later!) and it was like Christmas.

It's been great to be here, I have felt I "fit in real well" with the counselors... I think part of me was wondering how that would be, since I am making a transition and all. it is totally different from being an interpreter. Somewhat liberating. Speaking of liberating.....

Part of my program is in multi-cultural counseling, and I am continually humbled at how much I need to learn about being a white person in this world. Don't we just rarely even think about it? On Thursday here we celebrated "Juneteenth"... and I wasn't the only one in the crowd that was thankful the leader asked for more explanation. It is a holiday recognizing the emancipation of slavery in Texas.... a celebration that spread nationally as a second independence day for African Americans. About 39 states recognize it as a holiday, and I thought surely Washington isn't one of them... since I'd never heard of it. (It is.) Arnold Scwartzineger signed it for California in 2005. It should be on our calendars, however? for now we might have to write it in.... for more info check out http://www.juneteenth.com/history.htm

Meanwhile, the Kalers are hitting the road. We have one week to check out as much of the east coast/New England area as our heart desires... first stop, Philadelphia! Lord willing then the Mariners in New York, then Boston, Cape Cod, MV... can't miss Fenway..... it shall be a fun vicarious trip together!! As Mrs. Barber says with the kids all lined up in the hallway.. "and awaaaaaayyyyy .......we go!!"

Arrived GU, pah!!

Hello friends!! I arrived safely to GU yesterday after a long day of airline travel... but alas, it was only one day!! Sure beats the five day version in the car (though we certainly miss our friends and the sights)!!

My arrival at Gally is like one big sigh of relief.. whether it is that I know I am where I'm supposed to be, or the bright big east coast sun (I swear it is closer here), or all the Deaf life that I crave.... it is nice to be "back home". Gally has changed even in one year!! I'll update photos soon... now I must be off to the conference. Thanks to all for the prayers and support... pray for Greg, bringing out the crew solo on Friday!! And trying to clean up the mess I left at the house!! HUGS
